Our quilt group also made some fidgit mats for people in Nursing homes. We assembled a mat about the size of a placemat, with batting. Then we pooled together our scraps, old zippers, lace, buttons, velcro and anything else we could find. It was a way to get rid of some scraps.
It was originally meant for people with alzheimers or dementia but I also made one for each of my grandchildren as a quiet activity mat to use at church. I put a pocket in each of theirs and cut out some foam letters for their names. I also made one for my cousin who has dementia. I used John Deere fabric and got some pony beads to string his name from shoe laces. It is a nice sensory activity mat.
