I have wanted to make a welcome sign for the front porch for a while and finally got to doing it yesterday. I already had scrap wood left over from another project we did and I had already stained it so it came together really quickly. I first attached the two long boards by nailing some smaller scrap pieces horizontally on the back every six inches or so. Then I was ready to attach some stencils with painters tape and painted in the letters with outdoor paint. Once it was dry I removed the stencils and attached some other scrap pieces along the bottom to create a stand. I plan to place a potted plant at the bottom of the sign since there is a lot of empty space at the bottom, also to hide the stand that I made.
